Artistic Influences

This week's theme was kick started yesterday by artist Sandra Boynton. It's all about re-visiting artists/ designers whom I think had a profound influence on my artistic career growing up as a child from school to college. It's a weird, eclectic group of people but I think that there is a common theme of colour and quirkiness. Much like my work today.

Who were your favourite artists/ designers when you were growing up?

Here's some of mine:
Versace - I loved all his over the top prints and colours. His designs celebrated pattern, glitz and opulence (much like the 90's I think).

I loved Benetton not only for their wonderful coloured knitwear but also their thought provoking advertisements.

I loved all the impressionists, in particular Monet and Pissaro.

Japanese Woodcuts - can you see a theme happening here?

  1. As far as artist go I think I was influenced a lot by Jasper Johns and Gustov Klimpt. Design-wise I was impressed by Vera Wang's early work. I remember seeing her first figure skating outfits and they were so shockingly clean-lined and lovely, compared to the foofie costumes that had been the norm up too that point.
Love the question, it really got me thinking, thanks.

  2. So many influences. I too liked Sandra Boynton. I still have her book on Chocolate. I guess my most important influence is Kaffe Fasett. I love how he is so bold with colour and pattern. I don't like all of his work but I like his boldness and daring.

  3. Hi GL - I loved Klimt also. I went to the museum in Vienna in January; if you've seen his work in real life you'll know that the book reproductions are pale comparisons.

Hi Munaiba - we have a mutual admiration for Kaffe!

  4. Ken Done - good one Chris! I remember being in year 7 when Mum took me for a day trip to Myer Melbourne because Ken Done was doing an 'in-store' presentation. We lined up and had our Ken Done silk scarves and Ken Done toilet bags signed in black texta. Major fans!

  5. I have seen Klimt's work in person and it is so much more amazing than you can imagine, compared to seeing it in books, I completely agree! Wow, to see it in Vienna, that sounds absolutely dreamy! What a great experience that must have been.
